Katie McGrath & Her Wonderful Roles

Katie McGrath is by far my favourite actor. every project she takes on, she has put her whole heart into, her acting skills are on point and her performances are radiant. Katie has a rare trait, that I find not many performers can pull off; a special talent in regard to portraying a character’s emotion, that talent is her face. No, I don’t mean her beauty, (I mean, lets face it she is beautiful) I mean the way she can embody one specific emotion just with a tilt of her head, a furrow of her brow, a raise of an eyebrow, a clench of her jaw, a wrinkle of her nose. A lot of her acting comes from facial expressions, and the way her emotions shine through those expressions. Any performer can read a script, and hold their posture the way the director asks, and many of them can play their character well but not many can delve deep into and essentially become that character with a small little raise of an eyebrow.

Katie is underrated. Many of her previous roles before her big break were independent projects, TV shows that deserved to last longer than they did (we’ll swing back to that later), or small character arcs where she only appeared for a few episodes. When she finally did get her big break in Supergirl (Note: she had other large roles before, however it didn’t catapult her into the public eye the way Supergirl did) her name was cemented and her well deserved recognition was delivered to her.

In this blog post, I want to share my list of favourite characters she has played, because of the reasons below.

1. She is my favourite actor, my celebrity crush, and from what I have seen of her a down to earth person. She is not afraid to show how much of a silly person she is, how much she lives under a rock (she does not know how to work “the internet” as she calls it), and how well she treats her fans. she is a spokesperson for mental health, as she suffers from depression.

2. This month is PRIDE month, and Katie is a huge name in the LGBT community. She has represented/played many Lesbian/Bisexual characters. She’s also played characters that although their sexuality had not been stated on screen, she/creators of the show have stated the character was interested in women/intentionally had the subtext. Katie, while she has not stated her own sexuality (not that she owes anyone that) due to wanting to keep her life private (so private that she won’t even publicly disclose her birthday; only her age), she has not shied away from her support, being an ally and her personal pride of being part of the community due to the nature of her roles. Plus, she is one half of the most popular LBGT fictional ship (Ship = two characters people thought belonged together romantically) in TV History. Since it’s Pride Month I wanted to celebrate all she has given to the community.

3. I want to share these projects with others; as I am hoping maybe someone else will give one of her TV shows a chance, one of her movies a watch, and maybe she can get recognized for her work.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. Lets get started 🙂

1. Lena Luthor

TV Show: Supergirl

Lena is a complex character and far from one dimensional. The amount of layers to this character are never ending. At first she comes off as a powerful CEO, with an icy persona. As time goes on we see that she has a good heart, opposite her brother Lex Luthor, she just wants to be her own kind of hero. She develops a friendship with Kara Danvers (Supergirl) and that friendship peels back other layers. We find out that she is scared of being labelled a Luthor, and people seeing her as ‘just like her brother’. We find out she has been hurt so many times in her past, that her ice queen persona is meant to keep people out because she is so terrified of getting hurt. We find out that she is pro-alien, and even works with Supergirl despite some turbulence in their relationship. As time progresses we see her trust both Kara Danvers and Supergirl, until her reality crashes down and she finds out they were the same person. One of Katies best acted scenes as Lena Luthor, was when Lena confronted Supergirl about knowing her identity, how her best friend betrayed her, and how Lena killed her brother for her, only to be blindsided and betrayed. (Video of scene Below)

video from YouTube channel: Arrowverse United

After she and Kara Danvers/Supergirl mended their friendship, Lena began to shine more so in Season 6 (and so did Katie) when Lena’s heart was on her sleeve, her walls torn down, the heroic side on display, and she became part of Supergirl’s official team – meaning we got to see her save the world, and in action. What made Lena a phenomenal hero, was that she was human, and her scientific side is what drove her to greatness, the witch side of her, just enhanced a marvellous character. Katie played her perfectly, and I cannot think of the role played by anyone else. In the future, when a new Lena Luthor is cast in different supergirl projects, they have a lot to live up to (Then again so does Supergirl herself because Melissa Benoist is also phenomenal and their on screen chemistry made both their characters shine brightly, as they bounced off of one another well).

Bonus Fact: Katie was only slated for three episodes in season 2 as a guest star. Lena became a fan favourite instantly, and the show-runners decided to keep her on as a recurring character, and upped her to main cast in the third season.

PRIDE Bonus Fact (In honour of PRIDE Month): Lena was one of Katie’s characters with queer subtext. In an interview Katie said she thought Lena may have been the first character she played without any, but admitted she was wrong (and she did not mind, she actually supported the Lena and Kara romantic ship!)

2. Lucy Westenra

TV Show: Dracula

Katie graced TV screens as Lucy in only one season of Dracula, before the network axed it, despite successful ratings. The network decided to part ways with the show, in favour of the show Constantine (which ironically was also part of the arrowverse like Supergirl) which failed spectacular in the ratings field, and was cancelled. Anyway, enough about that, because it upsets me.

Lucy is a sweet, caring, a little meek, and beautiful woman who fits into the rich population of London (UK). She’s a dedicated friend, who in the pilot, that’s what her role is, Mina’s best friend. As the show continues Lucy shines, we see her suffer because she is in love with her best friend, who is about to marry, and the emotions we see break my heart. I imagine unrequited love would hurt, I was lucky to never experience that to a full extent (childhood crushes don’t count) and seeing how Katie portrays that on screen, is so powerful and you truly feel for Lucy, as if you are feeling what she is feeling. Not only does Lucy feel a love, that she can never have for Mina, but she has to see her happy with her fiancé Jonathan in the beginning, only to watch her fall in love with Dracula himself.

Then there is Lady Jane, who opens Lucy up to admitting her sexuality to her, uses it against her to gain her trust, gives her advice to tell Mina how she feels, which she knows will cause Lucy’s heart to break, and then after Mina rejects her and shatters Lucy’s heart even more so than it already was, Lady Jane convinces Lucy to sleep with Jonathan to get back at Mina. We then have to watch Lucy swallow her sexuality, force herself to sleep with Jonathan (Not all fans liked this direction, as they thought it wasn’t obvious that Lucy was struggling in the scene – as a viewer myself I think it was a little more obvious, especially since we know Lucy was shown to be a good at hiding how she felt), and then when she can’t keep the secret from Mina, loses her best friend and woman she is in love with when she tells her the truth. Then poor Lucy pays for the betrayal with her life, as Dracula turns her into a vampire.

We watch as Katie plays the ups and downs of Lucy’s emotions, her roller coaster ride of love, self acceptance, and hatred for not only others but herself, and the bitter pain in her heart to perfection.

I do recommend this show, not just because of Katie McGrath and her great performance, but the story line is good, and it has a well rounded cast!

Bonus Fact: Katie was quite upset when they cancelled Dracula, as it was her dream project. She re-thought acting when it was cancelled!

PRIDE Bonus Fact (In honour of PRIDE Month): The onscreen kiss she shared with Victoria Smurfit (Lady Jane) was improvised; the directors let Victoria lead the scene, and she decided it was the perfect thing to do in the moment. They kept the take!

3. Morgana Pendragon

TV Show: Merlin

I still haven’t finished every episode, but even with that in mind, Morgana by far is an amazing character, and Katie does so well, bringing her to life. Her story was tragic, and you can feel it as Katie portrays a woman who is crumbling, and breaking, and morphing into the villain we know and love.

Morgana starts off as a good woman, with a good heart. her character is easy to fall in love with and you instantly care about Morgana in the first episode. When she almost dies a few episodes later, you actually feel your heart clench because this innocent, good hearted woman is about to die, and you hold your breath as Merlin works to save her. It was a train wreck of an episode, but luckily she is saved and we get to see more of Morgana.

We watch Morgana go from a good woman, who harboured her secret that she had magic in a magic banned society, who loved her friends, and would never harm them, to a villain who wants to be queen, embraces her magic, and wants them all dead. Watching that transition and the way Katie portrays it is beautiful. I believe the best part of Morgana’s story, is that she was not born evil, she was made evil. Merlin poisoned her and tried to kill her; because she was a tether to a spell (Her sister put the town to sleep, and made Morgana the tether to the spell); A spell that Morgana didn’t cast and despite her not being at fault for the spell, he tried to kill her to save everyone else. Morgana was betrayed, and she herself had been put to sleep, and most likely didn’t understand what was happening. After that, her back is turned on him, and it was just one thing after the other. Uther who has made Morgana believe she was his best friend’s daughter, when she was actually his daughter and wasn’t claimed by him; therefore she truly was the next one in line for the throne. That betrayal was a lot, followed by many other events, and a villain was created.

Katie dedicated herself to the part of Morgana, she had to put more effort than her cast mates in because she was the only one who hadn’t gone to acting school, it was her first major television role, and she wasn’t a household name. She learned how to sword fight, among other things, to fully embrace her character and play her with perfection.

Supergirl may have put Katie on the map to a more worldwide audience, and catapulted her career, but Merlin is what began that career.

Bonus Fact: Katie almost lost out on her role because both she and Colin Morgan were both Irish! Show-runners did not want both main characters to have an Irish accent, luckily for Katie, Colin was able to nail an English accent, and she got to use her natural Irish accent.

PRIDE Bonus Fact (In honour of PRIDE Month): Morgana’s sexuality was never confirmed in the show itself. However she showed no interest in men throughout the series, did not have a love interest. During dvd commentary with Katie, and creator/showrunner/director it was mentioned that Morgana intentionally had lesbian undertones/subtext.

4. Saskia De Merindol

TV Show: Secret Bridesmaids’ Business

Saskia is many things. She’s a strong, mildly corrupt, high powered lawyer. She’d do anything for her friends. She’d never commit to someone romantically. She’s emotionally messy. She’s an unashamed bisexual and not once did she second guess protecting her best friend/woman she was in love with, Olivia. When a man, who had an affair with one of her other friends, Melanie, starts stalking her, Saskia provides support and is there for her and tries her best to help her stop it. Unfortunately he soon attaches himself to Olivia, and Saskia gets pulled into an intense showdown in the end of the series.

Saskia battles PTSD during the series after the stalker attacks her, almost strangling her to death, and begins attaching herself to a gun, and making sure she does anything she needs to do, to protect her, and her friends.

All throughout that, she embezzled from her company to save Olivia’s family company, seeks help from an ex to pay it off, manages not to get caught and gets promoted, and fears the loss of her best friend when they fear Olivia’s cancer has returned. Much like Lucy (her character above in Dracula), we see Saskia battle unrequited love, as she too is painfully in love with her best friend, and the emotions Katie pours into that and brings that out in Saskia, is gut wrenching.

It’s a shame it was a limited 6-episode special; because seeing more of Saskia would have been a great treat.

Bonus Fact: Katie gave herself no break during Supergirl’s filming hiatus, as she filmed this during that time, in Australia!

PRIDE Bonus Fact (In honour of PRIDE Month): This was Katie’s third queer character in the order of her filmography (First was Morgana, who although it was not mentioned in the show was admitted by creator after the show, followed by Kate in Dates, leading us to Saskia). It was also her second queer character, who was in love with a best friend that did not love her back.

5. Sarah Bennett

TV Show: Slasher

Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) – The Walking Dead – Season 4 _ Gallery – Photo Credit: Frank Ockenfels 3/AMC

This Canadian anthology series, was the first TV show that I saw with Katie in it. At the time, I thought she was an amazing actress, who held her own in this horror show, and of course I thought she was beautiful.

Katie really can play any character in any genre, from supernatural to superhero to drama to romance to horror, she can master any/all of it.

Sarah Bennett starts the series as your typical girl next door. Quiet, sweet, big hearted, and a stunning smile, Sarah is the definition of girl next door; until we dig deeper into her past. The house she moves into was left to her by her parents who had been murdered by a killer when she was an unborn baby (she survived because the killer cut her out of her mother’s womb!). She finds out her mother and father were up to shady things, the man she thought was her father, wasn’t. Her biological father was the killer known as the Executioner, who killed her parents, who she connects with during the series because she needs his help, as someone copying the Executioner has surfaced and is after her.

As the show progresses we see Sarah spiral, fall into a game of cat and mouse, fight to survive, and watch those around her get murdered. Katie does a great job playing the character, and as you watch Sarah devolve, and find her strength to beat the killer, you can feel Katie’s performance because it radiates off of the screen.

Bonus Fact: Slasher was the show she had starred in right before landing Supergirl. Katie didn’t sign on for season two, because she chose to take the part of Lena Luthor.

(This does not feature a PRIDE fact as Katie plays a straight character, so below is an extra fact)

Bonus Fact: Slasher is filmed in a small Ontario town. It was Katie’s first project filmed in Canada, followed by Frontier, and then Supergirl (which was filmed in Vancouver). Katie fell in love with Canada, and in addition to her place in the UK, she also has a home in Vancouver where she resides.

6. Jules Daly

Movie: A Princess For Christmas

A Princess For Christmas Is my favourite Christmas movie (unfortunately I forgot to put it on my recent favourite movie blog, which is blasphemy). It’s a feel good rom-com, and Jules is a great character, not a typical, boring, over used character that appears in most rom-coms, and I believe that is thanks to Katie’s portrayal.

She brings out the emotions that Jules is feeling, a year after losing her sister and brother-in-law, and taking in their kids as a single parent. She is contacted by the children’s royal grandfather from her brother-in-laws side, and although she is apprehensive she takes the invitation to spend Christmas at his royal home.

Through the movie, she struggles with her nephew who is making her life harder as he misses his parents, and hates Christmas because of the previous holiday season when they passed away. People judge her because she is a clumsy, goofy American who is out of her element. All the while the prince, who is engaged to be married to a woman in high standing, falls in love with her.

Bonus Fact: Katie, who plays Jules a woman in her mid twenties, and the actor (Travis Turner) who plays Milo, her 15/16 year old nephew, are only four years apart in real life! The actor was much older than his character.

(This does not feature a PRIDE fact as Katie plays a straight character, so below is an extra fact)

Bonus Fact: Despite most actors being able to use their natural UK accent in the film, Katie had to hide her Irish accent, as she played an American character, however you can hear it slip out at times!

7. Gloria

Movie: The Throwaways

The Throwaways was a good action movie, despite its low budget; something you need to keep in mind while watching it.

The characters were an ensemble cast, which made up a group of discarded agents/misfits (hence the name Throwaways) that were chosen to help our main character, a hacker, stop another hacker who can access 80 percent of the world electronics from a laptop, threatening the world as they could do anything, including shutting things down, etc. Our main character chooses Gloria to be part of his team, who was used in most of her assignments as a woman who could use her beauty and feminine wiles to gather information from powerful/dangerous men.

Her skills are sadly under utilized, and most people don’t realize they exist, but he chooses her to be apart of his team, and we get to see Gloria’s skills come out, as she shows up all the guys with a perfect sniper shot, going toe to toe with one of the villains, killing her after a fight that she won with minimal effort.

Gloria was a treat as you saw this woman grow. She was underestimated because of her beauty, and was actually a talented agent, who could have been an asset to the government long before this, if they hadn’t dismissed her.

Bonus Fact: This movie was a Crackle original. Crackle was a streaming service that tried to get off the ground, but failed shortly after due to high profile streaming services like Netflix.

(This does not feature a PRIDE fact as Katie plays a presumed straight character, so below is an extra fact)

Bonus Fact: This film is low budget, but it works to its advantage as they use some of it as humour in the movie.

8. Kate

TV Show: Dates

Dates was a series, where each episode features a different love story, with two characters falling in love. Some Episodes will feature an update on a couple down the line, but not always. Katie was part of a love story between her character Kate and Erika.

At first, when we meet Kate she’s a tad mysterious, alluring, and the opposite of shy, and will go after what she wants. However, due to the pain she has been put through in her past by an EX who was bisexual and left her for a man, she is apprehensive of dating Erika; as she finds out during their date Erika is in the closet, and is to marry a man according to her traditional family. Kate comes off as Biphobic, which can put some people off of Kate and dislike the character, but anyone can see she only acts that way because of her past pain.

As the date continues, and her attitude shifts, the date shifts into a good place as they dance on the dance floor of the bar they’re at, and their night concludes by the two being intimate. The rest of their story is angsty as it takes place in the bedroom the next morning, where they need to communicate what the future holds for them, when Kate realizes Erika is still in the closet, and how she will cope with that. We find out in an episode later down the line in the season, when Erika re-appears that she and Kate are still together.

Bonus Fact: Katie claims she can’t dance, yet has a dancing scene with co-star Gemma Chan!

Bonus PRIDE Fact (In honour of PRIDE Month): Katie had a girl crush on her co-star, and claimed Gemma Chan was prettier than her. (which is simply not true)

9.The Adjudicator

TV Show: The Continental

I myself have not seen the full show; I have however watched Katie’s scenes on YouTube. I did not want to invest time in the show itself, as I have never seen John Wick and honestly Katie was the only reason I would have had for watching it. I was mildly disappointed when I found out she only appeared in 5 minutes per episode (and it was only a three episode event).

There isn’t much character development, as the villain she plays is in the series only in small amounts, but Katie does a great job at making a character intimidating, and gut churning, in the small amount that she graced screens in this series.

This series is her most recent piece of work, and according to many news outlets, Katie’s adjudicator stole the show, even through her small amount of screen time. Katie’s appearance of the Adjudicator also broke twitter (now known as X) as she was trending, and all results of the show yielding only Katie results, and her co-star John Cryer (Lex Luthor in Supergirl) even said “Katie McGrath Stans….Activate!” his own tweet becoming trending.

Unfortunately her character doesn’t survive; but at least we got the performance that she gifted us.

Bonus Fact: This is the third villainous role played by Katie McGrath. The others being Morgana Pendragon in Merlin and Orlane Congost in Labyrinth (TV Mini Series).

Bonus PRIDE Fact (In honour of PRIDE Month): The Adjudicator in the films is queer; in the TV Show, her orientation is not specified, as she is not interested in romance.

10. Zara

Movie: Jurassic World

This movie was the first film I saw with Katie in it; Slasher was the first TV Show; however this happened first. Her part was quite small, and it took me a while to realize that amazing woman from Slasher that I became a huge fan of, was in Jurassic World.

We didn’t learn much about Zara, other than the fact that she did not care about babysitting the nephews of the main character, just wanted to plan her wedding, and was completely overworked by her boss.

What makes Katie’s role in this movie memorable is her characters sudden death, and the way it happened. In fact her death has become the most memorable, and brutal in the complete movie series; most character deaths happen quick; but Zara’s was long in runt time for a character death, and despite not being gory or bloody, was quite brutal. Fans of the movie series have even dubbed this the most brutal death.

She was grabbed by a Pterodactyl (or a Pterodactyl like dinosaur), she is dropped several times as she is tossed from one Pterodactyl to another; eventually she is dropped several times over the water, and caught by the flying dinosaur every time, almost drowning, just as the dinosaur flies up with a better grip the Mosasaurus rises from the water and opens his mouth taking both Zara and the Pterodactyl into it’s mouth, eating them both.

Bonus Fact: Katie did all her own stunts in this movie.

(This does not feature a PRIDE fact as the gender of Zara’s fiancé is never disclosed; however it is assumed to be a man)

Bonus Fact: Zara is remembered by most Jurassic World fans due to her death.

11. Jodi

Movie: Leading Lady

This movie was not my favourite, although it had good potential, I feel it lacked in certain areas. Katie and Bok van Blerk had no on-screen chemistry making it hard to believe the love story, not to mention the kiss scenes were hard to stomach as he looked as if he was trying to swallow her face, while she seemed to be pulling away from the kiss while still attempting to complete her kiss scene; which made the on screen kisses odd to watch; and honestly a little awkward. In this instance I blame him, and not her acting skills.

All of that aside, her character was the best part. A teacher that yearns to be a famous actress, gets involved in a play in South Africa, and connects with a family while she is there.

Her character was sweet, kind hearted, and a pleasure to watch.

I’d watch the movie again mostly for Jodi and Katie’s portrayal of her.

Bonus Fact: Katie is Irish, but in this film she takes on a British accent, which she could not master early on in her career as she almost lost out on Morgana, because she had to keep her Irish accent and could not nail an English accent (See Morgana Bonus fact above).

(This does not feature a PRIDE fact as Katie plays a straight character)

Although the following did not make my list of favourite Katie characters. I recommend checking out the following projects that Katie has been in: Frontier (A Canadian TV Show), Buttons (A Musical Christmas Movie – she does not sing), Labyrinth (A TV mini series), The Queen (She guest starred in one episode, opposite her Merlin co-star), Red Mist – AKA Freakdog – (Her first horror project – she’s only had two with this and Slasher), King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (A movie she had a small role in – also taking place in Arthur times, much like Merlin).

I also make YouTube videos, which I usually do for fun, and many of them have gathered many views. My most popular video (which is unrelated to Katie) has 368K views (as of writing this). Below I have embedded a few videos I have made, focusing on Katie, for Katie’s fandom, but also to show my respect. Two of them are focused on Katie herself, and the other two are focused on the characters she has played. Please give them a watch, if not for Katie herself, then to support my YouTube channel and to hear the great songs that go with them! (P.s. if you cannot view them, it is because mobile may not allow it and you may have to go to a computer).

Title: Katie McGrath – Unstoppable (This is a video combination of her characters)

Title: Katie McGrath – Beautiful (Clips of Katie, being well…Katie)

Title: Katie McGrath {Filmography} – The Greatest (This is a video combination of her characters)

Title: Katie McGrath – Classic

Bonus Video:

I made a video dedicated to Morgana, one of the characters above. I decided to share it here; because I love seeing Morgana’s evil in all its glory. And well, to promote my YouTube channel.

Title: Morgana Pendragon – Dark Side

Thank you for reading this long blog post; and I have more blog posts coming. There will some music ones coming, some more PRIDE posts as it’s PRIDE month, and I will be starting something new where I will be writing short stories based on prompts that have been given to me (for example – Prompt: write a scene where a person is running from a masked killer), however I am unsure when that will start.

My Favourite Movies

As you know, I love sharing my opinions, especially about the things that I enjoy. I have always been a bigger fan of television shows, over movies; I never quite figured out why; but that’s how it’s always been. That doesn’t mean I don’t watch movies, because I’ve seen many and I own over 1000 movies (That’s just the physical copies). Despite that, I am very picky with movies, usually once I have seen them I rarely watch them again unless they entertained me/made an impression. Once I have watched them over ten times, they are most likely on my favourite movie list. It’s a small list, but I am proud of the list that I have. I’ve always liked many different genres, my favourites being Comedy/Rom-com and Horror. Funny enough, my favourite movie list is mostly comprised of Romantic Dramas (some Rom-Coms) that are about a woman falling for another woman (Usually some form of “Forbidden Romance”). Horror is barely on it, despite it being one of my favourite genres. However movie series wide, Horror dominates.

I am a complicated person, and of course nothing is easy with me, not even favourite things. I also have what is known to my brain as my secondary favourite list. That list is comprised of movies that I absolutely love, more so than other movies, but they just aren’t as high as my ultimate favourites. Then of course my brain has a favourite movie series list; and when it comes to that list that does not guarantee any of them will be on my favourite movie list. Because maybe they didn’t make that cut but as a series, they are great. Movie series, aren’t singular and the series of them all together, makes the story, so it’s hard to separate them as one singular movie; but it happens as you’ll see.

For this blog post, I’ve decided to let you in on my crazy brain, and how it organizes films I love. I will separate them, there will be tier one – titled Ultimate. This tier will hold my favourites, movies I have seen several times, movies I can’t stop watching, movies I’ve watched on my worst of days to feel better, movies I may even know the lines of because I have seen them that often. Tier two will be titled Second Best, these movies are ones that I love, and call them favourites, but they are on a lower level than the ones above it. For this tier I have not watched them as often, but every watch is a ball of enjoyment and I absolutely love the film. Then there is Tier Three, which is opposite of the other two, Greatest Series, these are movie series I love, have followed, and get excited when a new one is announced, but are hard to classify as a favourite film because they are not singular; and if any make it to tier one, they were just that good. Each list will/could consist of a blurb, photos, movie posters, and I think this blog will be a fun ride to create, possibly annoying for you to read, but you’re here aren’t you?

Now, how many people are this messed up and organize things this way in their brain? Yup, I knew it was just me. Now, Lets proceed shall we.

Ultimate:

1. IMAGINE ME & YOU

This has been my top choice for a film for a very long time; it’s been so long that I can’t even tell you how many years it’s been. I was introduced to this gem of a movie when I was a teenager, trying to find my own place in the world, and understanding my own sexuality. I latched onto it quickly, and the love story between Luce & Rachel is beautiful. The forbidden aspect, as Rachel is married in the beginning, is engrossing as it always is. I love the way they made the film, how they handled a married woman falling for her soulmate while realizing her sexuality. I love that for once they made the main male lead a decent guy who lets the women go, and knows she can’t control her heart. It’s a touching story, wonderfully acted, and of course holds the quote (from an angsty scene between Luce & Rachel) “Don’t Forget Me. I Won’t Remember Anything Else.” which I have tattooed on my arm, because that’s how much I love this movie, and how much it means to me. I know when I am sad, having one of my manic depressed states, stressed, had a long day, I can turn on the movie and it instantly makes everything better.

Bonus Fact: The title of the movie comes from the song Happy Together by the Turtles, which plays during the end credits.

2. D.E.B.S

I have loved this movie for a long time as well. I have known about it almost as long as Imagine Me & You. What I like about it, is it’s not just a rom-com with its meet cute, mid angsty moment, before they reunite formula. It’s a pile of cheese, not just cheese, but cheese sauce, that’s how for lack of a better word cheesy this movie is. Throw in the spy spoof element, and the forbidden “Enemies to Lovers” trope and you have a perfect formula according to my special brain. This is another movie that when I’m down, I can throw on as it always makes me laugh because it’s so incredibly corny; and in this case I like corny.

Bonus Fact: DEBS originated as an 11 minute short.

3. POLARIZED

This English-Canadian movie, which is based in Stonewall, Manitoba, is a little more heavy than the ones above it. It’s not a movie I’d choose to watch when I’m down, but it’s captivating, emotional and so well written that I couldn’t help but fall in love it with. I love angst, usually in television not as much in movies, but with this one it worked out so well. This movie combines forbidden love, race & religion and the differences between the two main women. Their love holds dire consequences for them both. Lisa who is brought up in a religious family is put through an exorcism because she loves a woman and Dalia is shunned from her family, and family business because she leaves her husband, because she loves Lisa, who happens to be a woman. This movie packs on the sad (Lisa’s dad dies, Dalia is shunned, but also Dalia is unhappily forced to marry, Lisa is put through hell because she is gay, and of course their families dislike each other because of their differences in race) but despite all of the drama and sadness, the movie is so gripping, and a pleasant surprise, with a happy ending when it comes to their love.

Bonus Fact: It won the People’s Pick award at the Canadian Film Festival.

4. SCREAM (1996)

Scream is the best (my opinion) horror movie to ever exist. It revitalized a dying genre, it was a thrilling yet fun ride, made fun of the genre it belonged to, and catapulted Neve Campbell into scream queen stardom. The storyline was crafted well, with minimal flaws, and although one killer was easier to guess, as the boyfriend was an obvious route, his best friend wasn’t suspected through the whole movie. Despite the boyfriend being an obvious choice, they erased that with his character “dying”, and then brought it back with a twist ending. Scream not only brought back the horror genre, but it cemented it’s place in horror history, and made meta horror very popular (for those that don’t know what meta horror is, it is when a movie becomes self referential, using tropes and conventions of the horror genre to crack jokes and brings the story forth). Ghostface is one of the most recognizable slasher villains in the world (along with Jason, Freddy, and Michael) and the best part, is it’s never the same person, Ghostface is human, and each movie has a new exciting reasoning behind why Ghostface is killing people/after Sydney. Also, Scream also made the whole “have a big time actor get killed off in the first scene, but promote them as if they have a starring role” schtick famous.

Bonus Fact: While filming the actors never met the voice of Ghost face so their reactions would be more genuine when he called!

5. CRUSH

If you want a feel good movie, with a typical Rom-com formula, with a little bit of a love triangle, then this is the perfect movie. I like that it’s not too heavy, and it follows the typical formula of a teen/young adult love story, mixed with a twist and turn along the way. The first time I watched it, the whole story, as predictable (except for one twist of who the mystery vandal was) as it was, left me with a happy, gooey feeling once I completed it. I liked that her childhood crush, didn’t wind up being the person she wound up with, and that her heart fell for the person she was meant to be with along the way. It’s also another movie that proves Hollywood is moving in the right direction when it comes to Rom-Coms involving same-sex relationships; as this movie delves into our main character being hung up on another girl, without a second thought, and the whole story, and relationships move slowly without the angst of coming out, second guessing sexualities and all of that nonsense that Hollywood has played out, because some people just fall and don’t care, or already have themselves figured out.

Bonus Fact: Both leads, Rowan Blanchard and Auli’i Cravaho are part of the LGBTQ community!

6. THE GIRL NEXT DOOR

This is a raunchy, teenage comedy, with a genuine love story and surprisingly a lot of heart. It’s unique in it’s own right, as the story follows a typical unpopular high school senior named Matthew, who falls in love with a porn star, who just wants to live a normal young adult life. She is instantly pulled to Matthew who sees her, and not the adult film star as he has no idea who she is. Of course there is some angst, as despite it’s uniqueness it does follow a romance movie formula, and of course has the “drama hits, will they overcome it and find their way back to each other” story but all in all, I like the humour, the unique love story, and the character development that both Matthew and Danielle go through. Despite some raunchy humour, classic tropes, and the will they won’t they feel, it’s a great watch and well developed and in my opinion, well written for this genre.

Bonus Fact: This movie was inspired by Risky Business and American Pie; both similar movies in the genre.

7. SEASON OF LOVE

This is a recent addition to my list. This Christmas movie is a romance, that followed three different couples, one of the couples is already together when the movie starts and we seem them shift and evolve, while the other couples are forming in the movie. One couple holds the more dramatic storyline, while the other holds the cute/comedic storyline, and the other holds the angsty will they-won’t they dynamic. It’s a great ride, that gives a lot of variety in the relationships; along with a movie that captures the holiday spirit in a non-evasive way. It matches the similar formula of other multiple romance movies such as Valentine’s Day, Love Actually and New Year’s Eve, while bringing it’s own unique flare to it; and focusing on women love women romances. Of course there will always be one couple that your mind mainly focus’ on and routes for, but I did not hate any of the couples, and I thought for a low budget, independent studio film, it was well written and well done. If you want a feel good holiday romance and don’t care that women are the gender falling in love with one another, then give it a watch and add it to your Christmas collection.

Bonus Fact: This movie stars Dominique Provost-Chalkey a British-French Canadian actor, who also starred in Canadian television series Wynonna Earp as Waverly!

8. SNAPSHOTS

This was a gem I randomly discovered one day. It takes place in the past and present, and the couple who fall in love, you know very quickly into the movie that that couple does not have a happy ending, however the movie in general has a happy ending. It is truly a beautiful, yet heartbreaking movie, that somehow still manages to make you feel good inside despite the sadness. An elderly woman, visits with her daughter (who isn’t open minded) and her granddaughter (who is secretly battling her emotions as she fell in love with another woman) and the grandmother, tells the story to her granddaughter (and daughter) about the woman she once loved. We see their love story in flashbacks, and how she lost that love, and this story helps the granddaughter accept herself, and forces the daughter to open her mind, so she can accept her mother and her own daughter. It’s a movie that would have gone under my radar as it’s independent, with little marketing, if it wasn’t for Apple’s “you may like this” feature on the Apple Store; because it was similar to other movies I had bought. It may be a romance movie, but at its core it’s about family; and three different generations coming together.

Bonus Fact: This movie is based on a true story!

9. SCREAM 6

My two favourite movies in this series, is the classic original, and the sixth instalment. the sixth is special as it focuses on the Carpenter sisters, Sydney (Neve Campbell) is absent from this film, and the only original performer from the first movie is Courtney Cox (not including tiny flashes of Billy-Skeet Ulrich), who provides the nostalgia factor. Kirby (Hayden Panettiere), a character from the fourth installment, helps provide closure for her character who they had never confirmed survival, so it wraps up things from the series beautifully, but it also does a great job at making it’s own name for itself in the series. It does an amazing job at focusing on Sam’s connection with her father, who is Billy (the Ghostface killer from the first movie), while also tapping into the sadistic part of herself that came from her father, to defeat not one, not two, but three Ghostface killers, the first time three ever happened in a scream movie. In fact, this movie had four Ghostface killers, if you count the very first unmasking that happened in the first 15 minutes of the movie. I enjoyed this film, as I found this movie almost as good as the first one, it is by far the second best instalment in the entire series. Melissa and Jenna have a great onscreen connection, which helps make their sisterly bond more believable; and although Jenna Ortega was already becoming an upcoming scream queen before this movie, this film truly cemented that title, as she shined brightly. Not to mentioned I was blindsided by who the killers were, and completely sat mouth ajar in the theatre when it was revealed that there were three killers!

Bonus Fact: This is the first film in the franchise where Gail (Courtney Cox) receives her own call from Ghostface (as Randy intercepts her call in the second film)!

10. MORE BEAUTIFUL FOR HAVING BEEN BROKEN

This movie was something I had never seen before, as I found it special and unique. I’m sure similar movies exist, but it wouldn’t have been my typical watch, but once I watched it I was hooked. It’s got some “what if’s” and unanswered questions that unfold and develop as the story unfolds, and the child, Freddie, steals the show. The movie is about two women, who fall in love, yet are faced with many obstacles from the past, and present. We see Samantha’s daily routine of caring for her sick child, we see Max with her own mental struggles and how they come together, balance each other out, and how Freddie and falling for Sam gives Max strength that she didn’t realize was still there. Of course throw in some drama, from past secrets, and you got a wonderful, touching, emotional movie that actually has a happy ending for the romance, and even though Freddie passes in the end (after a time-skip, when the story he has been telling is complete (as he is the narrator) ), and while it’s sad, he is happy that his mom has found love, and is having another child.

Bonus Fact: This movie is semi-autobiographical, and based on the writer/director Nicole Conn’s own story!

11. NOTTING HILL

This movie will always be on my favourites list; even if I go a while without watching it. I fell in love with it when I saw it, mind you I was much younger then, around pre-teen age but I loved and still love this movie. It’s a typical romance formula, predictable, has that meet cute, falling for, angsty separation and then ultimately the happy ending, storyline but I can’t help but love it. I also like the idea of the famous actress, falling in love with the normal, everyday, regular guy; that made the romance unique to this movie. When I watched this movie, it also introduced me to Julia Roberts (I knew who she was, but I never really watched things she had been in at that point) and how good she is as a performer. This movie is a classic, and it used to be my go to movie when I needed to zone, fall asleep (as it was comforting), or just wanted a feel good movie to watch. I used to have a VHS television, where it had the VHS player in it, and this movie rarely left the VHS player, I borrowed it from my mom, and once I did, she rarely saw it after that. Since then, I have gotten the DVD and digital version of the movie, just so I could watch it however I wanted to. Everyone needs to see this classic, because to be honest they don’t really make movies like this anymore.

Bonus Fact: The original cut of the movie was three hours and thirty minutes long!

12. UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE

This light hearted, Christmas, romance was highly enjoyable. It’s minor angst made you hope the romance was going to work out, the unique storyline of a company wanting a families tree, to use in the Christmas tree lighting in the states capital was a unique plot that had never been done. Watching as Charlie tries to secure the tree for her political boss, and Alma the woman who doesn’t want her family to give the tree that’s been on their property for over 100 years, fall in love is also a treat. They start off as friction, as they want different things, but soon bond into a beautiful couple. For a Christmas movie that can just give you a good time, little angst, and leave you on a happy ending, this one is a good choice.

Bonus Fact: Elise Bauman (who starred as Alma) is Canadian and starred in the Canadian LGBT web series Carmilla.

Second Best

1. BOOKSMART

A funny, silly, coming of age movie about two young women who are trying to find themselves. Similar comedic genre as movies like American Pie, however this one packs a lot more heart; and in the end at it’s core it’s a movie about friendship and finding who you are beyond high school, and where you’re going now that high school is complete.

Bonus Fact: Olivia Wilde who directed the film, suggested that stars Kaitlyn Driver and Beanie Feldstein become roommates during the project to form a genuine rapport/friendship (their characters are best friends). It worked!

2. BELOW HER MOUTH

This movie is a little more provocative; and definitely recommended for adults only, as the scenes are quite intimate and revealing; however when you push that aside (as when it comes to me falling for a movie, it’s stories that lure me in) the story is angsty, alluring and of course all about love, and finding the one you belong with. The two lead characters are polar opposites, and one character can’t settle, while the other is going to be married, and yet their paths cross, their love blooms almost at first sight, and the whole movie is their journey to becoming what they are meant to be.

Bonus Trivia: The crew was entirely female, aside from two experienced crew members who were brought in to get a crane shot, of only one small scene of Dallas (one of the characters) walking across the streetcar tracks!

3. AMERICAN PIE

Movies like American Pie, cemented the teenage, raunchy, coming of age, comedy genre, which then spurred on many other movies which attempted to do the same thing, not all succeeding the way American Pie did. We see a group of seniors, wanting to graduate with experience, make a pact to sleep with someone before graduation. It sounds dumb, but the movie is actually hilarious. For many of the guys in the group, love wins out and they choose to follow their heart, instead of hooking up with random women to appease their ego. I am not a teenage boy, nor was I ever, but I can imagine that many of them could relate to Jim, our main character, as he struggles through finding himself, and the trials and tribulations of being just that, a teenage boy. For teenage girls who watched this, back when I was that young (33 is not old!) we could relate a little to the females in the movie but they weren’t front and centre, but I’m glad the new generation has female based movies like Booksmart and Prom Dates to help them.

Bonus Fact: Eugene Levy (Jim’s Dad) improvised most of his lines

4. BOTTOMS

Bottoms is another coming of age, raunchy comedy that focuses on two young women who are trying to find themselves, before graduating high school. The humour in this one, despite the characters ages, are more adult targeted and focuses heavy on the dry humour (my favorite). What I love about this movie is not only the humour, but the friendship focus, and the hard lesson it provides of not everything goes the way you want it to in life. It’s definitely a fun time; and I enjoyed every minute of it. As a side note it also catapults LGBT characters, as our two main characters are lesbians, into the limelight in this genre, which does not happen often.

Bonus Fact: When Josie talks about her “experience” in Juvie she is recounting the plot of the Hunger Games!

5. HOLLOW IN THE LAND

An independent thriller/mystery that took me by surprise. It was a low budget, Canadian movie; but it was well written and the mystery was quite intriguing and the answers at the end weren’t overly predictable. The cast, full of Canadian actors (Minus Dianna Agron who is American) put out great performances, and the effort that went into this movie paid off. I was a little hesitant when I sat down to watch it, but something I learned over the years is that independent movies can be some of the greatest movies you’ll ever see. Most of the movies on my lists are independent! Movies don’t always need a huge budget, explosions or actors based on their Hollywood status, all you need is a well written movie, actors who have talent, and a well put together film. This one was definitely worth the watch.

Bonus Fact: The film was filmed on location in Castlegar, British Columbia, where the director is from. He even had people he knew from his home town stand in as extras!

6. I HATE NEW YEARS

A good holiday, romance movie with a feel good ending, and a best friend’s to lovers story. Holiday movies aren’t usually my favourite, which is funny because upon looking at these lists, quite a bit of holiday movies show up. I genuinely enjoyed the feel good energy this movie put out. It wasn’t too serious, and had a solid build of a love story. It was just a good time.

Bonus Fact: Dia Frampton did all of her own singing in the film!

7. CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR

A love affair, murder, mystery, forbidden romance, and angst all wrapped into a precious little bow. Another perfect example of a low budget, independent, but shockingly good movie. It was a little slow as it began in the beginning, but it quickly had me pulled in, and the twist of her being a con woman who killed the rich husbands she married for their money, did shock me as to be honest I didn’t see it coming. I quite enjoyed the mystery, and mayhem that this movie delivered.

Bonus Fact: The movie was heavily inspired by the 1981 film Body Heat

8. LOOKING FOR HER

Seriously never thought I’d have this many Holiday movies on either list but sometimes, it happens. Once again, it’s a sweet, feel good holiday movie. Once again independent, small budgeted, but well done. It’s a story of a woman who asks an actress to pose as her girlfriend as she doesn’t want her parents, who are pushing her to marry, to know that she and her girlfriend broke up. Along the way comes shenanigans, and of course love. It was a good use of my time.

Bonus Fact: Olivia Buckle and Alexandra Swarens co-starred as romantic love interests before in a Christmas movie titled City Of Trees.

9. THE PURGE

The first movie in a stunning horror series. The first one was by far the best movie out of them all. The Purge is one night a year, a night the government cemented, where all crime including murder is legal. The first movie starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey (Our wonderful Luce from imagine Me & You and Cersei from Game Of Thrones) was hauntingly beautiful, in only a way a horror movie could be. It wasn’t about gore, or jump scares, what made this movie thrilling and genuinely scary was that it’s rooted in reality. The chaos comes when the son lets a homeless man in their secure home, to save him from a group of Purgers, marking targets on their backs. It turns into a slasher, home-invasion movie quite quickly. It’s seated in reality because The Purge is something that could happen, with what the world is coming to and home invasions are scary as homes are your safe spaces, but when someone comes in and tries to kill your family, and turns your safe place into a place of terror, it’s scary. This is a great film to watch on Halloween, but also all year round, especially if you love horror movies. It was a great addition in the genre and made Blumhouse Productions truly soar in the genre.

Bonus Fact: When asked what he’d do if the Purge became a reality in the USA, James Demonaco, the director, said he’d flee to Canada!

Greatest Series

These are my favourite movie series.I will list the movies I believe are the strongest in the series, and the weakest. Lets begin!

1. SCREAM

This horror series will always top the cake for me when it comes to a movie series. It catopolted Neve Campbell into Scream Queen Status, saved the horror franchise, and made horror movies that were meta, and made fun of the genre popular!

Strongest Movie: It’s a tie! Scream (1996), Scream 6

Weakest Movie: Scream 3, Scream 2022 (also known as Scream 5)

Bonus Fact: Scream was so popular it even crossed over onto TV; spawning a TV series unrelated to the movies. It ran for 3 seasons!

2. SAW

This horror season turned heads with its torture gore, and its unique traps. Each movie is methodically planned out to make them all connect, Tobin Bell’s portrayal of Jigsaw made him a horror legend.

Strongest Movie: It’s a Tie! Saw, Saw X (Aka Saw 10)

Weakest Movie: Saw VI (Aka Saw 6)

Bonus Fact: SAW only came to be because after finishing film school James Wan, and Leigh Whannell wanted to make a movie, they didn’t have much money, and the cheapest way was two actors, in one room. SAW was then born!

3. THE PURGE

A horror series based in a possible future reality. Each movie bringing something different to the series, of a terrible night, from different perspectives/areas of the city.

Strongest Movie: The Purge

Weakest Movie: The First Purge (Aka The Prequel)

Bonus Fact: Due to the popularity of the film series, a television series which was connected to the show, ran for two seasons!

4. VENOM

Venom, an Anti-hero (usually villain) from the Spiderman universe was brought into live action by Tom Hardy, who portrayed the anti-hero to perfection. I wasn’t going to include this as there is currently only two official Venom movies, with a third one on the way, but it’s turned into a series and even got pulled into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Strongest Movie: Venom: Let There Be Carnage (Aka Venom 2)

Weakest Movie: Venom

It was hard to pick a weak one and strong one with only two released movies, however the sequel is stronger than the first, so it won out.

Bonus Fact: Venom 2 marks the first live-action version of Carnage!

5. AMERICAN PIE

One of the longest running raunchy teenage, coming of age, movie series. American Pie spanned many movies, four with the original cast, and many movies with new characters. Each movie has its own charm, and is full of laughs!

Strongest Movie: Five way tie! (It was hard to pick!) American Pie, American Pie 2, American Reunion, American Pie: Girls Rule, American Pie: Band Camp

Weakest Movie: American Pie: Book of Love

Bonus Fact: American Pie: Girls Rule is the first American Pie movie to not star Eugene Levy, as he was always the connecting force. It was also the first movie where the main group of friends were all female.

6. SPIDER-MAN

Before there were three different Spider-man movie series that weren’t connected at all. However the Marvel Cinematic Universe connected all Spider-man movies in Spider-man: No Way Home, making them all part of the same series, in a sense. They are from different “Universes” thanks to the multiverse but co-exist and are all Spider-men in their worlds, and each of them come together in the best super hero movie ever made No Way Home to defeat threats that threaten all of their worlds. I have always been a fan of Spider-man, so of course the series is on my list. Below I have split them into Phases.

Phase 1

Known by many as Toby McGuire’s Spiderman Series, or Sam Raimi’s Spiderman

Strongest Movie: Spider-man

Weakest Movie: Spider-man 3 (this one is actually my favourite in this phase of the series, however his weird dance, and the terrible live action portrayal of venom lands it here)

Bonus Fact: The third movie had the first live action portrayal of Venom!

Phase 2

Known by many as The Amazing Spiderman Series, or Andrew Garfield’s Spiderman

Strongest Movie: The Amazing Spiderman 2

Weakest Movie: The Amazing Spiderman

Bonus Fact: This phase focused on Gwen Stacy as the titular love interest instead of Mary Jane/MJ

Phase 3

This is my favourite out of the three (although I love all of them). This one is known by many as The MCU Spider-man or Tom Holland’s Spider-man.

Strongest Movie: Spiderman: No Way Home

Weakest Movie: Spiderman: Far From Home

Bonus Fact: Tom Holland is the youngest live action Spider-man as he was only 15 in Spider-man: Homecoming!

7. FRIDAY THE 13TH

A classic horror movie franchise, scary in its time when the very first movie came out. It’s not as scary as it once was for my generation, and generations after mine, but it shaped the horror movie genre. Jason is one of the most recognizable horror movie villains in the world!

Strongest Movie: Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th (2009)

Weakest: Jason goes to Hell, Jason X

Bonus Fact: Because of a legal fight for the rights, there haven’t been any films since the 2009 soft reboot instalment. The legal fight also affected plans for TV Shows, as well as the video game!

Daily Prompt

Daily writing prompt
What are 5 everyday things that bring you happiness?

Sometimes my depression makes questions like this hard; but despite my daily struggles, I still feel happiness is sometimes the smallest of things. Even on my darkest days, I need to remember that I have things that most people would yearn for.

  1. My Wife: Waking up next to her, seeing her smile, being in her company. Essentially anything/everything about her makes me happy. She’s a huge reason why, even on the worst of days, I can calm down and find solace.
  2. My cats: their cuddles, their cute meows, their presence in my life. Having a fur baby is a blessing, even if Obsidian (Black Cat, Male) is kinda dumb, and Amethyst (Tortoise Shell, Female) is a demon that I swear the devil sent me.
  3. Music: I find a way to listen to music everyday, whether that be at work, at home, out and about, I will find a way to incorporate it into my everyday life.
  4. Watching TV: I am a huge TV buff. Once a day, usually after a long day at work, I sit down and make time for at least one episode of a TV show I am currently watching. That simple escape, if only for an hour, into a fictional world releases my stress, and allows my mind to rest, and my imagination to work.
  5. My Mom: My mom as corny as it sounds is my best friend. Knowing she’s okay, a simple text from her, a phone call, makes me happy. I know she’s always there for me, whether my day is bad or good.

Bonus: Writing makes me extremely happy. It is my art form, my talent. I could not include it, as I do not partake in it on an everyday basis, but without it; I’d be truly empty.

Saddest TV Character Deaths

Hello. This is my list of the saddest TV Character Deaths. This is based on my opinions, and the shows the I have seen. This won’t include deaths from shows like The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Sons Of Anarchy, Dexter, Orange Is The New Black, etc, as I have not seen those shows. I know those shows have sad deaths, as I have heard about them- after all I do not live under a rock – but I have not seen them, so I cannot include them. I am sure there are more sad TV deaths out there, and this list will probably grow, as I continue to watch television.

For now, This is the list of characters that we have lost, that I found sad, gut wrenching and/or heartbreaking.

They are not in any particular order, aside from number 1 and 2. Although the order they wound up in wasn’t too unfitting.

Also, Spoiler Alert, if you haven’t already seen a show, I reveal some pretty big plot points.

  1. Lexa (The 100)

Lexa stole my heart from the first episode that she was in. I loved her, and they made her so complex, so intriguing, and powerful that audiences couldn’t help but be drawn to her. She was brave, special and there were not many characters like her out there. I do not wish to delve into the chaos that was brought to light when the character died because of her lesbian status (If I start It will be a long rant, and ain’t nobody got time for that), however what I do want to delve into is the hurt I felt watching the scene of her untimely death. Everything about it stung; the stray bullet, the random happenstance, dying in her lovers arms, and of course Clarke’s reaction made the scene wreck me even more. Clarke just got the girl that she’s been in love with, and in an instance, she’s ripped away from her within a blink of an eye. What made that hurt was the tragedy mixed with the fact that it’s possible in real life. The fact that Clarke never gets over her throughout the whole series makes it all hurt more, because we also can’t move on either. We see Clarke grieve, protect Lexa’s Soul (It’s a whole flame, soul, computer chip thing, that I am not going to delve into, because it’s a “you need to watch it to understand it” thing), and force herself to continue on without her soulmate. Lexa’s death, while it propelled the plot, didn’t have to happen. It was a brilliant, strong, independent, leading female character, that was written off too soon. If I’m being honest I don’t know if I’ll get over Lexa’s death, and although the show ends with Clarke on earth, with her friends, in a relatively good place, it makes my heart ache knowing that my other favourite character will never get her happy ending, and will never move on from the love that she lost. (P.S. Lexa was so deeply loved, and her loss wrecked so many people, that in honour of the LGBTQ relationship and character taken too soon, a Con had been named after the couple. ClexaCon. It was a Con that specialized in LGBTQ characters, ships, etc, that had many celebrity guests that played LGBTQ characters (Caity Lotz, and Chyler Leigh being some of the guests). While ClexaCon has not returned for another Con season since 2022, it stands for a character and relationship that was lost too soon and shows how impactful this death was).

2. Joyce Summers (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

The worst part about this, is that Buffy could not prevent it. Buffy was used to saving people, and she did her best to save those close to her, but Buffy wasn’t able to save her mother, from Joyce’s natural cause of death. It was the first death in the series that was not related to the supernatural, and it stung. Every time I re-watch the show and I see the scene of Buffy finding her mother, my heart drops. The way Buffy says mom multiple times, and does everything she can, despite her mom having been gone for a while, is so heartbreaking. Knowing the behind the scenes fact that Sarah was only able to film the scene in 1-2 takes because of how heartbreaking it was for her, makes the scene hurt even more. The scene was loaded with raw emotions, and I cried (rare). I feel like most people did. I know Joyce’s death was supposed to show Buffy that she can’t stop everything, but it was still a massive blow that felt like someone ripped audiences’ hearts out and stomped on them. It did not help that Joyce just fought her sickness, entered remission, and then was ultimately taken from an aneurysm caused by the surgery. Her death was then followed by the team and their grieving; Buffy’s was hard enough, but Anya who has never been faced with moral death before broke apart, and Dawn (Buffy’s sister) who tried to resurrect her mother because of her grief, made it more painful. It was very intense, and I believe it is the saddest death in the whole series.

3. Daenerys Targaryen (Game Of Thrones)

This death made me feel sadness, but also anger. Daenerys was built up to be a survivor, a hero, the woman who would take the throne. Of course, it was Game of Thrones and nobody was safe, but despite that Game Of Thrones law, she was the one character they made seem safe, audiences’ believed she’d be safe. Her mental breakdown, her betrayal from her lover, and ultimately her death, it was all a pointless whirlwind given to us by the writers. The 8th season of Game of Thrones was the worst, as it was rushed, and the events that took place weren’t exactly believable for these characters to go through, but that knowledge did not make her death hurt any less. We start off the show connecting to this young woman, who is put through trials and tribulations, hell, and a forced marriage. We were forced to watch as her brother treated her like a speck of dirt, her husband and her child are killed, and so many other painful moments, that all we wanted was for her to get that one sliver of happiness by sitting on that Iron Throne. We rooted for her, audiences loved her, and out of all the characters making their way to the Iron Throne, she would have been the best ruler. her mental breakdown, while I understand it after everything she had been through, topped off by seeing her enemy decapitate her best friend, was unwarranted. From the beginning she was proof that not all Targaryen’s are mad, not all of them want war and blood shed; but then they took Dany down the most horrendous path for her character, and the writing and direction made her death worse. Not to mention the one person she began to trust the most in the world, and developed romantic feelings for, blindsided her and stabbed a knife through her heart. The characters death was sad to watch, and painful to tolerate as an ending for the character arc.

4. Danielle “Dani” Clayton (The Haunting of Bly Manor)

I entered this show knowing Dani did not survive, but it still didn’t prepare me for the pain, for watching it happen, and how the story led to her death. This show, while a horror involving spirits and death, was at its core a beautiful love story. The show is narrated by a woman who tells Dani’s story. Dani was an innocent woman, who did not deserve the fate she was given, all she wanted was to get away from her American life, the loss of her boyfriend (who died tragically after she came out to him as gay – and spent half the series blaming herself for his passing), and the guilt that haunter her. All she wanted was to start over, and she got that opportunity when she became the nanny to two children that she quickly bonded with. In her uprooted life, she also fell in love with Jamie, the families gardener. While the two women face difficulties, mostly Dani’s guilt which won’t allow her to follow her heart, they finally meld together and a beautiful relationship is born. It all begins to slowly fade, when Dani gets possessed by a deadly spirit and is unsure how long she will have to live, before she is taken over and lured to her own death. Jamie is there the whole way, vows to be by her side, and keep her company and their relationship flourishes for many years; until the spirit starts to overtake Dani, and she runs out of time. One night when the spirit over takes over and almost strangles Jamie, she snaps out of it and she rushes back to Bly Manor where she drowns herself to return the spirit (known as The Lady of the Lake) back to the lake. The scene of watching Jamie wake up, knowing what Dani had just done, rushing after her, and being to late and finding her at the bottom of the lake was so gut wrenching that I just stared at the screen with my mouth open, and unblinking. My eyes watered, but I never cried (not a sign that it’s not sad – I am not a cryer – so those on this list that make me cry…well….) but my body felt like it needed to. The story concludes with the audience finding out the older woman, telling the story to a couple on their wedding day, is Jamie all grown up. She still grieves Dani, unable to move on, and every night leaves her door cracked, her sink and tub filled with water hoping Dani, the new Lady of the Lake will visit her. The part that I think pulled at my heartstrings the most wasn’t even Dani’s actual death, it was seeing older Jamie sitting in her chair, with Dani’s hand resting on her shoulder, and Jamie having no idea that she had visited her, and most likely had been the visiting her the whole time.

5. Angel (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

Okay, before I get into it I will say that while his death isn’t permanent, (nobody at the time could have predicted that) it stings like hell. If you were to watch the show for the first time, while it was airing, you’d have no clue that the character would get revived. When I first started watching Buffy, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram were not a thing (Relax, I am not that old, sorry I am telling that to myself); and it was harder to get spoilers for shows you were watching. I had no idea when I started watching it that Angel would survive, I knew there was a spin-off show that just started, but how was I to know how that was all formulated? Regardless his death hurt, a lot. Every re-watch (that’s a lot by the way) still gets me. It’s a mix of the setting, the emotions, Buffy’s pain, Angel’s evil side, and the tragedy of how he dies that makes it all extremely painful to watch. Buffy, being the slayer, has to fight the man she loves with her whole heart, to protect the world, and that’s just the beginning of the tragedy. The other part is Willow informs Xander that she can get Angel’s soul back, and to warn Buffy so she can stall (it was never explicitly said – but it’s implied that Willow wanted Buffy to be able to make the fight last until the spell worked). Xander however, doesn’t warn Buffy, instead she tells her to kick his ass, and therefore she is unable to hold Angel off on awakening the demon, which can only be put back to sleep with the death of the person who awoke him (it’s all a blood thing – not important). Unfortunately this particular demon is going to swallow everyone into a mouth of hell, and all Buffy is left to do is kill the man she loves BUT that’s not all. Right before she is about to give a killing blow, Angel gets his soul back and the Angel she loved is in front of her, with no memory of anything that happened, and Buffy is left with no choice. She kisses him, pretends nothing is wrong, and then stabs him with her sword and cries, breaks down and watches as her lover is sucked into the demons portal, closing the portal, saving the world but breaking apart her world. I don’t blame Buffy for running away, and trying to hide from everything that happened after that.

6. Laurel Lance (Arrow)

I’ve never had the best blend of heartbreak and anger in regard to a characters death as I did when Laurel lost her life on Arrow. There is nothing like a show giving you hope, only to rip it away moments later, and I was so angry when they did that when it came to Laurel’s fate. I started off the show not being a huge fan of Laurel, her season one arch was lacklustre at best, but when season two came along they really started to flesh her out, and I grew to love her, almost as much as I loved the character behind the name of the show. Laurel, besides Oliver, and Sarah (more on her later), was my favourite hero. She did not have any special powers, but all she wanted to do was help, so she trained and took on the mantle of Black Canary after her sister, the previous one, had died. Laurel had a strength that wasn’t just physical but her emotional journey was pleasant to watch, along with her storyline as she started to take shape and form into a strong, independent hero who fought for what she believed to be right. When the villain they were fighting that season stabbed Laurel, which made me jump because I was not expecting it, my heart started racing, as they raced to save her life. Then, when she made it through the surgery, and woke up and had a conversation with Oliver, and I thought, thank god she is okay, the show ripped that away in moments as suddenly Laurel started crashing and she was gone. I swore at the TV, stopped watching the show for a while, and stewed in both my anger and sadness. I understand why scenes like this happen, as a writer myself, it’s for shock factor and to worsen the heartbreak, but that does not mean they have to do it. I was devastated. Then, they brought a Laurel back from a different earth, and the part of me that didn’t want the actress to leave was happy, but the part of me that loved the original Laurel was mad, because that wasn’t the Laurel I wanted (Why kill her off to bring a different Laurel into the mix?). The Laurel I loved, and wanted to see become the hero I knew she could evolve into, died and I fought so hard to like the new one. Ultimately I fell for the new Laurel too; but I was not happy that the original Laurel was gone.

7. The Red Wedding – Robb Stark, Catelyn Stark, Talisa Stark, Unborn Baby & Grey Wind (Game Of Thrones)

This whole massacre, which has been dubbed The Red Wedding was so painful to watch. This scene did actually make me cry, and my wife and I had to take a break from the show, just to get our mental states back in tact (Yes, I am aware it is a television show, but when television shows are one of your passions, and you get invested, your mind needs a break). It had been the most brutal death scene I had seen in a TV show, and I was completely destroyed. I was never a huge fan of Catelyn Stark in particular, but even her death had me in shock, and had my stomach in knots. Now for the explanation, Robb, and Catelyn had made an agreement that he’d marry a woman from another house, to gain an alliance, and support in regard to him being the king of the north. Only, Robb falls for Telisa, they get married, and he breaks his promise, and is no longer able to marry another woman. They offer up someone else instead; but that was not good enough. House Frey organized the bloody massacre of the whole lot of them; killing each one brutally, in a different manor. The worst part about this, wasn’t that these characters had to parish, It was the way they did. Locked in a room, with nobody to save them, slaughtered like pigs. Talisa was pregnant, stabbed through her stomach multiple times, killing both her and their child, Robb was shot with arrows but ultimately died from a knife to the heart, and Catelyn was forced to watch the death of her son, before her throat was slit; then to add some more icing on the massacre cake, they also killed Robb’s pet dire wolf Grey Wind. By the time the episode was done I was a disaster, and in complete and utter shock of what I had just witnessed. Going in I knew Game of Thrones was brutal, but I was taken aback by The Red Wedding and I know many other fans were as well.

8. Madame Marguerite (The Confessions of Frannie Langton)

So this is one of those incidents where the TV show starts off with a characters death, and the show is about finding out how it came to that point, while also clearing the other main characters name. Well newsflash, it starting off with the characters death does not make it hurt any less. At first, when you first see that Madame had died, it doesn’t pack a punch because you have no idea who this character was, and what happened. However, as you watch the show, it gives you a surprise gut punch, as you start to get to know the character, get attached, grow to care for her, and then you start wanting a different ending, holding onto hope that she may somehow survive when you know she won’t, as she started off the series dead. As the story is told, not only do you grow attached to her, but also to the love story between Madame and her lady’s maid Frannie. All you want to do is yell at the TV and say she wouldn’t have done that to her, she loves her, while at the same time feeling your heart break because Frannie has to face the court case, and the people accusing her of killing the person she loved most in the world. The whole story is hauntingly beautiful from beginning to end, it’s well acted, and you feel the pain of both actresses as the characters evolve and their story takes shape. Unfortunately the story was meant to be tragic, but going in knowing that, it still doesn’t help. It makes it hurt more, when you find out that Frannie did not kill her (which I mean was obvious) and that Madame took her own life; and all you can do is dwell on it and grumpily mumble to yourself that the show is stupid, while also simultaneously thinking it was a wonderful show you’d watch again. So many emotions in this gem of a mini series. Sophie Cookson (Who Played Madame) who I absolutely adore, pulled off a stunning performance which made it harder, when you remember as the show goes on that there its no happy ending for this character.

9. Kara Danvers/Supergirl (Supergirl)

Before anyone judges me for including this, despite her death lasting less than five minutes, and her being revived thanks to Alex, helping her gather sunlight from the grass, I was still a mess. I didn’t know what the hell was going to happen, all I saw was that my favourite character, one of my favourite TV Characters of all time, had died. I was shattered and kept mumbling, she has to live there’s more seasons, what is happening, and then I looked at my wife and proceeded to be upset, waiting for Supergirl to wake the hell up. Alex’s reaction made the whole scene more heart wrenching. She didn’t even remember her sister had been Supergirl due to a mind wipe, and it took Supergirl dying in front of her, for her memories to come back, and then she was a blubbering mess, crying over her sisters body. She was begging anyone who would listen for Kara to survive, and Chyler Leigh’s performance made me feel the sadness, the sudden onslaught of begging for the same thing, and the want for everything to get better as soon as possible. The moment Kara took her first breath after absorbing sun from the grass, I turned into a thankful, blubbering idiot. After that I willed the show not to play with my feelings like that again.

10. Graham (Once Upon A Time)

Graham did not deserve what happened to him. We are introduced to Graham in the first season of Once Upon A Time. He’s the Sheriff of the new cursed world the Queen has created, gets dealt a bad hand in being under her control, essentially running things how she wants them run, and when he starts pulling away and starting to live life the way he wants to, Regina was quick to put a stop to it. Graham, after kissing Emma, begins to slowly loose his mind as his memories of his real life, begin to clash with the fake memories of his new life. Emma begins to help him find answers, and their feelings for one another continue to bubble to the surface and the couple we all hoped would flourish, is ripped apart the moment after they kiss, as Regina takes his heart from her vault and crushes him, killing him in Emma’s arms (Why can’t any couple get their happy ending!). While it presented as a natural cause, a heart attack, I believe his death is what created some doubt in Emma and maybe that’s why the writers had it happen, but I feel like it was another pointless character death that did not have to happen. The character grows on you quickly and all you want is better for him, only for his death to come suddenly, and without mercy. I am starting to think that it’s a trend for TV Shows to kill off a wonderful character, just as they get the love interest they had fallen for, erasing all hope of happiness (Yeah, I’m looking back up at you The 100).

11. J.T. Yorke (Degrassi)

This was torture. I was a teenager myself when I first saw this episode, and I remember sitting in my room, crying (yes – this one got me) as J.T. bled out in the street, beside his car. Degrassi was dramatic, that was a given, and I knew that going in, but I never expected something with that much intensity to occur, especially to an original character that had been there since season 1. I was not expecting it, so when it happened, it took me (and probably many other viewers) off-guard. They lead up to it by having J.T. have a small beef with a rival school, but the last thing I expected was for one of those kids to randomly stab J.T. in a random moment of anger, outside of a house party, when J.T. was about to leave. What makes his death so sad was how sudden it was and unexpected it was but also, we loved his character as he grew up on the show from a small middle school kid, to a teenager who was beginning to find his footing in life. He was a character that you expected to see every episode, even if he wasn’t part of the main story in that episode, you could expect a joke from him, even if it was in passing. J.T. was definitely the comic relief, but he was also the loveable goofball, that you couldn’t help but love. Did he always make the best decisions, no, but he was growing up and mistakes happen. When they had J.T. overdose and almost die, that was hard enough, and I thought that that was all we had to worry about and then in Season 6; he was gone in a blink of an eye. Once again, a love story that never got to continue was involved in this one as well. He was on his way to tell his first love, that he still loved her, only he never made it, and she found him on the ground and he essentially died in her arms. While he was taken to the hospital; I knew, most people knew, that he wasn’t going to make it. At least he wasn’t alone, but the fact that he never got his happy ending, never got to grow up, made it terribly sad.

12. Tara Maclay (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

So here is the deal, I am so sick of stray bullets that are not meant for a character to be the cause of their death. Tara’s death was hard, for many reasons. Tara was innocent, she didn’t have a bad bone in her body and had never done anything wrong. Her heart was so good, and she was such a positive force in the dark world that the gang faced daily. She was a little shy, and nervous when she was first introduced but she grew more comfortable with the gang, and we really got to see her true colours; we got to see her beautiful soul. She loved all of them in different ways; Dawn was like a younger sister to her, especially after having to raise her when Buffy had died. Willow was the love of her life and she loved her fiercely, Giles was someone she could look up to as her own parental figures were terrible people who turned their backs on Tara, and Buffy was someone she cared for and admired. We got to see her bond with each member in small increments, in fact one of my favourite scenes with Tara in it, had nothing to do with Willow (her romantic partner) but was between Tara and Buffy. I loved that Buffy broke down in Tara’s lap, and opened up to her about her sexual relationship with Spike. It showed that they too had a bond but it also was a point in the show when the audience can truly see how much Buffy values Tara’s opinion of her, and feels comfortable with her, trusting that she will protect her feelings in her vulnerable state. Tara had been through so much in her small three season journey in the show. She almost gets killed by Oz when he returns and gets jealous of what she and Willow have, she gets disowned by her family who view her as a demon because of her magic, she gets her mind erased from Glory a hell god, she copes with her partners addiction to magic, and feels betrayed when she finds out that Willow has been messing with her memory. Through all of that she remained in high spirits, and showed how strong she was, and that she would keep moving forward. Her death was shocking, and something that happened unexpectedly. Honestly before Lexa, there was Tara, and their deaths are eerily similar. Tara and Willow had recently seperated due to Willow’s addiction to magic, but after improvement and an attempt to get better, Willow and Tara get back together. Right after they get back together, Warren (a villain who wants Buffy dead) shows up with a gun, shoots at random, because apparently people in TV Shows don’t know what aim is, and although he hits his target with Buffy, a bullet goes through the window and hits Tara and she falls, and Willow holds her as she dies. Forgive me for a brief moment for getting a tad political which I tried to avoid with Lexa’s paragraph, but unfortunately for the TV show they broke ground with the first main Lesbian television character on prime time television, but it also responsible for bringing the bury your gay trope into the mainstream. In fact many deaths that have happened to queer women, continue to get compared to what the writers did to Tara. When Lexa died, it brought Tara’s death back into the forefront again, as they were heavily compared (You can even find a YouTube video titled Lexa’s death vs. Tara’s death). Tara’s death was tragic because it was an accident, one that didn’t need to happen, one that could have been prevented. Worst of all it acted as a plot point to pull Willow deeper into her addiction to magic, and push her over the edge.

13. Sara Lance (Arrow)

Once again another show that killed a character, but brought them back. Keep in mind when the show first aired, nobody knew that the character would be revived, to audiences she had died, and to fans of the character it was tragic. Sadly Sara’s death was quite tragic. She was a warrior, a trained assassin, and unfortunately even that could not protect her from the attack that caused her to die. Sara, in her Black Canary outfit, was on the roof of a building, and approached by-at the time someone we couldn’t see-but Sara never predicted that they’d kill her. It was obvious Sara was killed by someone she knew based on her reaction, and when we found out it was Oliver’s (The Arrow) sister, It truly broke my brain. I was hurt, pissed off, and upset that one of my favourite female characters, killed my other favourite female characters. I was completely torn on how I felt, I wanted to be angry at Thea for killing Sara, but I couldn’t because she was brainwashed and had no idea what she had done, and I wanted to be mad at the universe of TV writers for ruining all the potential Sara had as a character. By the time I started watching the series however, I knew she would have come back somehow, because Legends had premiered at that point. I was late to the Arrowverse, but I had no idea what was going to transpire or how she was in Legends. For all I knew it was an alternate version of her. In that moment all I knew was my favourite character in Arrow had been shot with multiple arrows, fell off a roof, hit her skull on the pavement and was found by Laurel who was utterly destroyed over her sisters death. After Sara’s death they had Laurel take up the Black Canary mantel and as much as I loved that, I missed Sara, she was a special character, unique and in my opinion the first bisexual mainstream superhero on television. Sara was an outcast, and made so many mistakes, which led to her almost drowning, getting trapped on an island with Oliver, had her rescued by a woman who loved her but also trained her to become an assassin, her family thought she was dead, and when she finally came back and things were looking up for Sara, she died. Thanks to Laurel she is revived by the Lazarus Pit, which lets face it was why Sara died, so they could introduce The Pit which made her death a plot device, and then when she is revived she comes back as a monster that they have to work to tame, and have to call in Constantine to put her soul back in her body. Like the poor woman hadn’t been tortured enough.

14. Morgana Pendragon (Merlin)

First, Merlin legend aside, as everyone who knows the legend knows Morgana is bad, and dies. However I am focusing on the TV Show, not the legend for this post. Yes she is a villain but her death, although inevitable because she was the bad guy actually hurt. However, I am going in a different direction with this. Did watching Morgana get stabbed by Merlin hurt? Yes of course, because despite being the villain, Morgana was an amazing character and you couldn’t help but love her. The main reason why Morgana’s end hurts is because she could have been a good person, she started off the series as a good person, and it was everyone else that turned her into a villain. To quote the show Once Upon A Time: Evil isn’t born it’s made. Morgana was a perfect example of that. What made her death hurt was that her journey could have been much different if those around her treated her differently and didn’t push her, didn’t isolate her, didn’t make her feel like a villain that she grew to become. Uther lied to her for years, and couldn’t even claim her as his own daughter, making her think she was an orphan, until she was already grown. Morgana thought she would be killed because she had magic, and if Merlin had confessed he had it too, she may have had someone to rely on. Especially when he suspected she had it, he just left her to suffer and figure it all out on her own. Merlin hiding his magic from her, made her able to be corrupted by her long lost sister Morgause, who convinced her Arthur and Merlin were the real evil, and I mean their actions made it hard not to believe. Merlin is faced with a dilemma and the route he takes is to poison Morgana, causing her to feel betrayed and their relationship forever ruined. There are many more examples I can name, but the point is Morgana was led down a dark path, and those surrounding her didn’t bother to help her, they only pushed her on that path. Merlin created the enemy he feared to have, and that is why her death stings. He helped make her into what she is, and then kills her, killing the monster he helped create when she could have been a woman with a good heart.

15. Haley Hotchner (Criminal Minds)

This one was a doozy. Haley wasn’t a major character, in fact we only met her a handful of times, but that didn’t stop this death from tearing apart your rib cage, and pulling your heart out and then crushing it. That’s what it felt like. Aaron Hotchner was the character we knew, and Haley was his wife. Aaron, after he developes a cat and mouse relationship with a serial killer, is personally targeted and unfortunately that includes his family. One day, the Reaper gets the best of him, and makes his play and goes after his wife and son. Lucky for Aaron, his son was fine, however his wife did not get lucky. After connecting their whole conversation to the server, so that not only Aaron hears, but the whole team, as he torments Aaron, and shoots Haley without hesitating, instantly killing her. The scene is a lot more upsetting than my pathetic description, but it’s definitely one of those character deaths that stings more when you know the whole story, and see it happen. While you watch it all play out, Aaron’s reaction to hearing it all, and him beating the Reaper to death with his bare hands as all he sees is red. It all happens so fast, but to this day I still struggle to watch this episode, and I believe this is the saddest ark they have ever done.

16. Prudence “Prue” Halliwell (Charmed)

Prue was my favourite character on Charmed, and backstage drama aside, I did not want to see the character get killed off. I thought Prue was the most interesting sister, and the one that I seemed to relate to the most. She immediately grew on me, and I was hoping to see what she could become, as her character would continue to evolve and become the strong heroic Charmed one that she was bound to be. Unfortunately her story was cut short, in a shocking twist in the show, they are attacked by a demon and Prue does not make it. We don’t see her die but we find out afterward that she did not survive as Leo, their white lighter and Piper’s partner, wasn’t able to heal them both. More sadness comes as we watch Piper battle the grief and sink into the sadness at loosing her sister. It was bad enough that we had to say goodbye to Andy in season one, the man that Prue was meant to be with, but then we have to say goodbye to Prue as well. In my opinion, as much as I love the series it was never the same afterward. The new arrival Paige, carved her own path as part of the Charmed Ones, but it was hard as someone who loved Prue, and favoured her, to welcome a new Charmed One that in my eyes took her spot. It took me all of season 4 to even accept Paige and even then, I felt like she wasn’t the greatest addition, and was my least favourite. Unfortunately my brain was hooked on Prue, and what they had given us from the beginning, that it was hard to let go. Not to mention the Charmed remake, killed off Macy (essentially the “Prue” of the remake) and created a stigma that anything to due with Charmed in the future will have a Charmed One die in the third season – which sets a negative tone. Prue added something to the sibling dynamic, and the show as a character that I believe Charmed struggled to find afterward.

17. Adele Stackhouse (True Blood)

So many people were killed off in True Blood, but one that will always stand out is Adele Stackhouse. She was not a major character, but she was the heart and soul of the Stackhouse family home. She was a kind, welcoming woman that had a good heart, and accepted many people of all kinds. Like Sookie, she was one of the few in Bon Temps that actually welcomed, and accepted the Vampires. Unfortunately, she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. A serial killer in the first season is killing people who are involved with vampires romantically & sexually, and he is after Sookie. He goes to their home, and while Sookie isn’t there, Adele is and she gets caught in the crossfire. When Sookie comes home, she comes home to a blood massacre in her kitchen, and while we see the outcome of everything, the blood splattered walls, the puddle of blood Sookie slips in, we can’t help but feel a pit in our stomach, at the point we don’t know who died; but we soon find out as she finds Adele and it’s heartbreaking. It breaks Sookie, but it also breaks the audience. It was an innocent woman, who did not deserve it.

18. Buffy Summers (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

I watched my hero die, I watched my hero sacrifice herself to save the world; to save her sister. I watched my hero jump into a hell dimension, which painfully killed her. I watched as her friends cried when they found her body. I struggled. While some people look up to Superman, Batman or Wonder Woman, Buffy was my first Superhero. Sure, I was a fan of Spiderman since childhood, but Buffy was my first genuine hero. I looked up to her in so many ways. She showed me a woman can fight any battle, that women are strong, appearances can be deceiving, and that you can conquer anything that is thrown your way. Watching Buffy sacrifice herself was a hard pill to swallow for me. Originally Season 5 was going to be the last, and while her death was a fitting way to end the series, it wasn’t what I wanted. I knew the moment she stepped on that pole thing (I don’t know what to call it) and Buffy remembered telling Dawn not long ago that she had Summers blood and that the monks made her out of her, that Buffy would realize that her blood was also the key and could close the portal. In that moment I knew Buffy would do what she had to do to protect her sister, and save the world. That’s who Buffy was, sacrificing herself and even her own happiness to make sure those she loved were safe, and that the world didn’t burn down to the ground. When Season 6 was made, and Buffy came back, it was interesting to see what/how they were going to do that. I did not expect her return to be just as gut wrenching as her death. Buffy comes back, has to crawl her way out of her coffin because her dumb friends did the spell to bring her back to life, but didn’t prepare her body for it. Buffy rose from the dead into a town that was in disarray, and when Dawn finds her, she’s afraid, alone and asks if she’s in hell. It broke my heart, and then to find out that her friends ripped her out of heaven was the topping on the cake of depression.

19. Finn Hudson (Glee)

I was never a big fan of Finn, he was not my favourite character. He was overall a good guy, however not my cup of tea. What made this death especially hard was the real life passing of Cory Monteith, and the fact that the character only passed, because the actor tragically passed. The reactions of the cast are genuine and the tribute episode was deeply heartbreaking, because while we were saying goodbye to Finn, we were mostly saying goodbye to the actor that brought that character to life. He may have been one of my least favourite characters, but it was a hard pill to swallow; knowing we’d never hear that voice again, never see Finn get his happy ending, never see those horrible dance moves, and never see that lopsided and adorable smile again.

Note: The entries below belong on this list, don’t get me wrong, but as sad as their character deaths made me, I have a little less to say about them. So I will continue the list, however you may find the paragraphs get shorter. Onto the next one.

20. Quentin Fields (One Tree Hill)

I never saw the point of Quentin’s death. It was a sad excuse for shock factor, heartbreaking, and one of those character deaths that seems pointless. Yes his death teaches Jamie (Haley & Nathan’s son) what loss is, as it’s his first major loss, but it held no other meaning (Yes the guy that killed him is connected to Brooke’s store break-in but they could have brought that in a different way). It was heartbreaking, upsetting and terrible that this storyline even occurred. Quentin was a troubled kid, who was finally getting guidance from his teacher Haley, and bonding with Nathan and Jamie, and getting his life together only to walk into a gas station, spot that the owner had a dead guy in the back, and got shot so he couldn’t say anything. It all boggled my mind, and it’s still sad to watch.

21. Chet Hunter (Boy Meets World)

Chet was a character I never liked. He left his son to go on a magical chase to find his wife who didn’t want him, never connected with Jack his other son, and wondered why his sons had issues with him. However, his death was terribly sad, and the reason being is the way it took place, and the effect it had on Shawn Hunter, his son. Chet finally came home, decided he was going to settle there (although at first he lied) and the boys finally got what they wanted. Chet has a heart attack, is taken to the hospital and pulls through. He tells his sons he is for sure going to stay, and they feel as if they have a real shot, until he suffers a second heart attack and the boys loose their father. Shawn takes it the worst, and sinks into a deep depression, that Jack (with some help from Core) can get him out of. He realizes that he needs to connect with Jack as that’s all he has left of his dad. Chet appears periodically through out the rest of the series, as Shawn’s inner thoughts to guide him, when he needs some help.

22. Keith Scott (One Tree Hill)

Another pointless death on this show. I don’t understand the point behind every person they killed off on this show. Keith was a genuine good guy, loved Lucas like the father the kid never had, and despite how horrible his brother Dan was, Keith was the only one that still loved him. Dan, his brother, obsessed with wanting revenge as he believed Keith tried to kill him, takes advantage of a school shooting (oh yeah, emotions for viewers were already high because this episode ark was terrifying as they did it so well, that viewers felt as if they were there). and shoots Keith and blames it on the school shooter. The whole storyline was tragic, and the character did not deserve to go out that way.

23. Michael Cordero Jr (Jane The Virgin)

First of all, the whole storyline revolving his death was completely insane. I understand it’s a telenovela; but I struggled to wrap my head around it. They killed him off, we as well as Jane grieved, especially since it was sudden and Jane’s reaction when she gets the call is heartbreaking, and that’s what ultimately broke me, and then they’re like just kidding. They bring Michael back, reveal the villain of the story faked his death, wiped his memory, and now he has a new life. When he is reunited with Jane, their past love is gone, and Jane tries her best to cope with this new Michael, who now goes by Jason. He eventually regains his memories, and they try and connect but it ultimately fails. Jane had moved on, had fallen in love with Rafael, and grieved Michael and now she had to grieve him all over again, while her current relationship fell apart because she felt like she had to be loyal to her husband. Not only did his original death upset me, especially since I loved Michael and Jane, but the rest of the storyline was a kick to the brain.

24. Baelfire “Bae” (Once Upon A Time)

Here’s the thing. I loved Bae. I was a hard core Swan Queen (Emma & Regina) shipper, but since I knew that would never happen, I desperately hoped once they introduced Bae, and he and Emma started to reconnect, that she would wind up with him. I adored them together, and I think they could have had a much deserved second chance. Instead, he dies which was quite sad. He disappeared, after they returned from the Enchanted Forest and when he makes his way back into Storybook and everyone is happy to see he is okay, we find out he is looking for his father and that he and Rumplestiltskin (His dad) are magically connected, something his dad had to do, in order to keep Bae alive after something that happened in the Enchanted Forest. Bae begs Emma to separate them, knowing it would kill him, so they can know the identity of the Wicked Witch. Emma does that, and Bae dies in her arms, before they can even get a fresh start or a new romantic beginning.

25. Marissa Cooper (The O.C.)

Marissa had a rough life. Terrible things kept happening to her, her boyfriend cheats on her, she overdoses in Mexico, a boy she thought was a good friend becomes obsessed and tries to shoot her and Ryan, Ryan breaks her heart, her relationship with Alex fails, her mother and she hate each other, she becomes romantically linked to an abuser, and just when she and Ryan may have a chance at getting back together, and her life may get back on track, her abuser ex-boyfriend runs their car off the road, causing a fatal car accident that kills her. The fact that her life was one tragedy after another is what hurts the most, only to have her tragic life, end well…tragically.

26. Lucy Westenra (Dracula)

Okay, so Lucy doesn’t entirely die, but I added her for a reason. The Lucy we grow to love, and feel for, ends the series with her humanity ripped away from her after Dracula turns her into a vampire. Her human side, that we love, has died and is now replaced with a vampiric monster. Especially since in this show, without proper training, it is difficult to keep your humanity and follow the life of good (or as good as a vampire can be). The reason why her transformation is so sad, is because she fell in love with her best friend Mina, after Lady Jane manipulates her, she confesses how she feels to her friend, who rejects her because she does not feel the same (and is not interested in women). In response a heartbroken Lucy (who has spent the whole series up to that point heartbroken because she was longing for a woman she believed would never love her) sleeps with Mina’s fiancé, who Mina is currently at odds with. It’s an action that Lucy would never have done if Lady Jane hadn’t told her to do it and used her naivety against her to manipulate her into thinking the idea was a good one. Because she can’t keep it a secret she tells Mina. Mina then tells Alexander Grayson (Dracula) and because she hurt Mina, he turns her into a vampire. What sucks even more, the fiancé Johnathan gets away with his actions of cheating on his fiancé, while Lucy pays the ultimate price with her human life.

Tv Show Review: Gypsy

I was hesitant to begin watching Gypsy as I had heard that it got cancelled, and when a show gets cancelled I’m always nervous to delve into it because I never know what I will be left with in the end. However, I was so glad I decided to take this show for a ride. Was the show perfect? No. Was it the best show in the world? No. Was it gripping, new and interesting? Yes

The show surrounds a therapist named Jean who gets involved in her patients personal lives, and the last patient she had that this happened with, is now in an asylum while she is continuing to live her life with little consequence, as she has a way of manipulating people into believing she is perfect at her career, and had no involvement in any bad behaviour. We find out that she hasn’t gotten deeply involved with a patient’s personal life in a while, but then her patient Sam comes along. Surprisingly instead of being obsessed with Sam himself, she is lured into his story about his ex girlfriend and seeks her out. As she gets drawn into Sidney (The Ex) a sizzling affair starts, full of lies and secrets but yet despite all of that, they fall in love.

Sidney and Jean’s relationship is definitely toxic; it starts with bad intentions on Jean’s part, and it’s full of secrets and lies but one thing is for certain, there is love that comes from it, on both sides. Jean can’t let her go; and Sidney when she finds out everything, still goes crawling back to her.

The show was brutally cancelled before we had closure, and before we could really see where they’d go, and where Jean’s professional career, which began to fall apart would go, as well as her marriage now that he knows she not only had a secret apartment, but an affair.

Spoiler: The show ends with a scene between Jean and Sidney; Sidney shows up at Jean’s speech after finding out the truth, and that Jean was married and has a child. They share a smile and a look, signalling that more was to come, that despite the secrets Sidney still wants her, and that Jean has that power over her.

I personally enjoyed the show. The beginning was a little bit slow, but it picked up and once it did, I couldn’t stop watching it. I loved the development of both Jean and Sidney. You really got to see how Jean got in over her head and what started off as curiosity and her wanting to know this dangerous woman that Sam spoke of, to addictive love. You got to see how Sidney, this risky woman, who breaks hearts and doesn’t commit, falls hopelessly in love with Jean. It’s a story about deception, mental instability, but also love.

The actresses, Naomi Watts (Jean) and Sophie Cookson (Sidney) are amazing. They pour themselves into these roles and really make the show, and the storyline believable.

Would I watch the show again? Yes. Would I recommend it to people who like Psychological Dramas? Yes. Am I disappointed it was cancelled? Yes, however the ending they gave still worked for the end of a series. It’s not the best show in the world, but it was a fun little ride and I enjoyed it.

P.s. I also made a video focused on the couple, and included it below. Despite the toxic ups and downs, I adore the couple.

Today’s Prompt

What advice would you give to your teenage self?

Well this is an intense question for sure. My teenage self was a mess, and honestly a part of that girl never disappeared; I can feel my teenage self still deep inside, mostly the emotional, anxious, emotionally scarred girl.

I think if I could, I’d go back and tell myself that everything will be okay. The bullies wound up no where, while you become successful. You get married, your friends and family accept you, and you build a solid career.

I’d tell my high school self that it is only four years, even though it’s miserable, after high school things will be okay.

I’d probably tell myself to get my butt to class, and stop skipping, but alas My teenage self probably wouldn’t have listened.

Today’s Prompt

What bores you?

Honestly when I saw this prompt appear on my Home Screen of my blog, I knew instantly how to answer it. What bores me? It’s simple really. Doing nothing. I have ADHD and one thing that bores me, and that I absolutely can’t stand is just sitting somewhere; or standing doing nothing.

Standing in line, appointments, slow days at work, among other things, to me are not only boring, but annoying. Because of my ADHD, I always tend to have to do something. If I decide to sit down and read, I get immersed in the book, but I always find something to fidget with. Same with TV, I’ll watch a tv show but I shift, I fidget, it’s who I am, it’s how my brain is wired.

The one thing I absolutely can’t do is just sit there, that’s why even on a phone call, I pace. Things can be boring when you’re in just one place, and your mind isn’t stimulated by doing some form of activity even if it’s something as small and simple as phone scrolling, at least that isn’t overly boring. My attention needs to be fulfilled.

That’s my story of what bores me.

Stellar Musicians

I decided to dedicate another blog post to music; I wanted to delve into my favourite artists. I enjoy sharing music with people, music that they may not know, hence my song of the day posts (which I will be discontinuing) but maybe I can introduce someone to a new artist.

I wanted to share my favourite artists; who I spend my time listening to and dedicate my time burying myself in their albums, their songs, and their musical styles because of what their music means to me. My musical style has always been very versatile; and because of that every artist I favour isn’t always the same genre. Even the pop stars have a different sound, not all of them are cookie cutter, while some maybe are. The bands I enjoy, some are alternative with a mix of pop, while others are punk smashed together with rock and pop.

I do enjoy country, and I love many country artists; and I do favour some country artists over others, but no country artists are my absolute favourite musicians; but because they could be one day, I feel like I have to mention Dan & Shay and how incredibly talented they are, and maybe one day they’ll be on my list. I feel the exact same way about Hailee Steinfeld, a rising pop star in her own right.

I suppose I will get started, Please note that they aren’t in any particular order; however the first three artists are in order; the others I just placed their slot randomly.

Also, I enjoyed making the colleges, to add some flare to my post. I love messing around with photos, creating designs, and it helped provide an added outlet to this post.

  1. Taylor Swift

I feel like she is probably at the top of many people’s list. After all she is is one of the most famous female pop stars on the planet, but I find many people started listening to her because her fame grew, she became more popular, and grew into this huge musical presence. That is fine, I am more than okay with that, however I was introduced to her when I was young, and watched CMT after school, and tTeardrops On My Guitar and Tim McGraw played all the time. Her music, and lyrics drew me in and I have not shaken her music since. In fact, if anything, I have become a bigger fan over the years. Her music evolved and I continue to enjoy it. her songwriting skills are out of this world, and I love listening to an artist whose music means so much to them, as well as the fans. Taylor has created such a large fanbase that even other artists show their love, by writing their own songs about her. For Example: Taylor Did by Alana Springsteen, Taylor Swift by Matt Cooper. I don’t think Taylor’s music is going anywhere anytime soon, in fact I think it’s just beginning. Her star is going to shine brighter this year, and I feel like her new album coming out, will be another masterpiece.

Below I have listed my favourite songs from her (There are most likely more, that I’ll think about later on and be like “Oh Yeah!”) and my favourite albums.

Fav Songs: Wonderland, Delicate, I Almost Do, All Too Well, Anti-Hero, Come Back…Be Here, The Moment I Knew, Cruel Summer, The Man, You Need To Calm Down, Wildest Dreams, Me! (Feat. Brendon Urie), Vigilante Sh*t

Fav Albums: 1989, Midnights

2. FLETCHER

I fell in love with Fletcher’s music over the last two years; I was first introduced to her because of YouTube. One day she popped up on my feed, and YouTube knew exactly what they were doing. What made me click on the video was the featured artist in her song, but I’m glad I did, I listened and I was hooked. After that, I began listening to all of the music she had released (I am stoked for her upcoming album), and created a playlist just for her on my Spotify. A playlist I am pretty sure I’ve played to death at this point. Much like Taylor, Fletcher captures real feelings with her lyrics, and a lot of them have deep meaning, which is the first thing that attracts me to a musical artist. I need meaning behind my music, solid lyrics, along with a talented voice. Not all her songs are deep of course, she has some powerful catchy club hits, that although they hold meaning, aren’t necessarily deep, but that’s more than okay. Every artists needs those, and plus they always tend to get stuck in my head, so I suppose she is doing her job.

Another thing that pulled me into Fletcher is as I was discovering her music, and digging in deep, I realized that she was singing about loving women, about women breaking her heart, and of course I looked her up more in depth, and found out she was part of the community, and does not shy away from her sexuality and openly sings about loving other women, and the pain she’s gone through. In fact one of her songs, Girls Girls Girls (which samples Katy Perry’s I kissed a girl in the chorus) has one of my favourite lyrics in an LGBT song “I knew right then, right there it was so cinematic. because it started to rain and I said “oh my god your body’s speaking my language”. I told my mom it’s not a phase cause I kissed a girl and I liked it.” I’m glad that this generation will also have a singer that can help them accept themselves; I already discovered myself long before I discovered Fletcher but hopefully her openness can show other young women struggling, that you don’t have to hide who you are.

Below I have listed my favourite songs from her (There are most likely more) and my favourite albums (I have included EP’s {Extended Plays} in this category – as Fletcher has had more EP’s than full length albums).

Fav Songs: Eras of Us, Becky’s So Hot, For Cari, Cherry (With Hayley Kiyoko), Better Version (With Kelsea Ballerini), Her Body Is Bible, Girl of My Dreams, I Love You Bitch, Bitter (Kito Version), Butterflies (Duet With MAX), F*ck you for ruining New York City, Healing, War Paint, Live Young Die Free

Fav Albums: Girl Of My Dreams, The S(EX) Tapes

3. Kelly Clarkson

I am 1000 percent certain that she is the artist that has remained in my favourites the longest. Other artists I grew up listening to, or discovered in my most pivotal years, I’ve drifted away from as I evolved and changed, however Kelly’s music has stuck with me. I have loved her since 2002, shortly after she won American Idol (I did not watch her season, and learned of her shortly after when her singles were released), and since then I haven’t been able to let her music go. I don’t want to either. Her music has helped me through so many things in my life, and I truly believe it was because of her music that I even made it through high school. Her music which blasted through my headphones, as I ignored the world around me. Her music helped me through my first break-up, with my first serious boyfriend, while I thought my heart was going to never mend, Kelly made it better. Her music has been there for not only the rough times, but good times as well. I have seen her twice live, and although my memories are fuzzy (Apparently that’s a phenomenon when seeing concerts/performances that you’re excited about – I am getting off topic. It’s the damn ADHD again.) I’ve followed her career, and every accomplish she made, I felt proud of her because I felt a part of that musical journey because of how long I’ve been a fan. I know that Kelly will continue to evolve as the years go on, and I know she’ll keep reaching success with her music, and tv show, and in my mind she will be one of the greatest female performers of all time.

p.s. I was pretty sure she was my first big crush on a female celebrity; but it took me a while to realize that, and some self discovery of course. Unfortunately I don’t harbour that crush on her anymore.

Below I have listed my favourite songs from her (There are most likely more) and my favourite albums.

Fav Songs: Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You), Einstein, You Can’t Win, My Life Would Suck Without You, Cry, Don’t Let Me Stop You, Sober, Since U Been Gone, The Trouble With Love Is, Anytime, Behind these Hazel Eyes, The Sun Will Rise, Already Gone

Fav Albums: Breakaway, Thankful, All I Ever Wanted

4. Marianas Trench

First off, Marianas Trench have been apart of my life for a very long time. I fell in love with them when their debut album came out in 2006; and I have been a dedicated listener ever since. Josh’s (lease singer) voice is one of a kind, and I am a hundred percent sure, no other man will ever have a voice like his. Not to mention his song writing skills blow me away every time they release an album, he is a true poet. One of my favourite parts of their projects is finding that one song, that ties other songs into it. Another thing I always look forward to after a new album has been released is the first song on the album, they always start off big and grand with their opening song and it’s such a treat. Their music was another aide in my later years of high school; and their music definitely helped me cope with the depression I began to face, the anxiety and the bullying. When I had a rough day, their music, Josh’s lyrics and his powerful voice gave me a wonderful escape. I have been very loyal in regards to concerts when they have come to my area; I have lost track of how many times I’ve seen them, but I believe I have seen them almost once every album launch; except for their first one. I remember the first time I saw them, they weren’t that famous, and masterpiece theatre was just recently released, they were just starting to make a name for themselves and I saw them in a small bar, and they were so down to earth that they were signing autographs at their merch table, and I still have those autographs tucked away. Buying tickets to their show has never been a second thought or a waste of money, they are worth every live performance, and they sure know how to put on a show. I do hope that when their next album comes out, I’ll get to enjoy another concert and watch Josh’s voice truly shine. He’s wonderful on their albums, but he is one of the rare gems who is actually better live, as he puts his heart and soul into it and doesn’t sound much different that what he records.

Below I have listed my favourite songs from them (There are most likely more) and my favourite albums.

Fav Songs: Say Anything, Skin and Bones, Ever After, One Love, By Now, Fallout, Burning Up, Dearly Departed, I Knew You When, Pop 101, Here’s to the Zeroes, Good To You

Fav Albums: Ever After, Masterpiece Theatre

5. Set It Off

Set it off is a band I discovered through Youtube. Their music was recommended to me from the video website (Youtube’s nailed it with their recommendations) and I fell in love. I was a little late to the party in joining their fanbase, as the song that gripped me and lured me in was Killer In The Mirror; however naturally I looked up their past music and completely devoured it. Set It Off for me was a perfect mix of the Punk/Pop/Rock music I listened to when I was younger, which brought up that nostalgia but also represented the current stages in my life. Each album they release is so different from the next, that I always await what they’re going to gift me next; and how their music is going to evolve. Cody Carson, has a beautiful voice and I love how he can make any song unique, but also fill the lyrics he’s singing with emotion.

Below I have listed my favourite songs from them (There are most likely more) and my favourite albums.

Fav Songs: Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing (Feat. William Beckett), Why Worry, Killer In The Mirror, Lonely Dance, Dancing With The Devil, Go to Bed Angry (Feat. KC), Stitch Me Up, N.M.E., Forever Stuck In Our Youth, Projector, Skeleton, Ancient History, Me W/O Us.

Fav Albums: Duality, Midnight

6. We Three

I am a woman who struggles with anxiety and depression. Some days my struggles are worse than others. I am high functioning, but once in a while I have days where my depression wants to tether me to my apartment, to my bed and not release me. Many of their songs revolve around struggling with depression, intense feelings, the feelings of a broken heart, and self-love. Many of their songs really dig deep into Manny’s (the lead singer’s) dark days, and his depression. The band doesn’t hide the harsh times, they don’t shy away from singing about a mental illness that is stigmatized and still not fully understood. They embrace their personal struggles, and release it into the world. Not to mention, aside from their openness in their songs, their songwriting skills are poetic, and Manny’s voice and the pain you can feel behind it…it’s hauntingly beautiful.

This band originally made their debut on America’s Got Talent, as I don’t watch that show, I had no idea who they were at that stage in their career; however I discovered them all thanks to Youtube (once again). One day ‘I Wanna Love Somebody’ popped up in my recommended and I clicked on the music video, to give it a chance. I was captured instantly, and drove my wife insane by having it on repeat constantly. I slowly discovered their past music, as I slowly drowned myself in it. I discovered their song “Heavens Not Too Far Away” which made them famous on Americas Got Talent, and was completely moved. To hear their story in that song, and hearing them speak about the loss of their mother to cancer, it was so emotional and something very personal to share with the world. When my own father died from cancer, hearing that song was tough but comforting all at the same time.

Below I have listed my favourite songs from them (There are most likely more) and my favourite albums.

Fav Songs: Sweater Weather, I Wanna Love Somebody, Secrets, When I’m With You, Superman, Half-Hearted, Same Way too, 3AM, Heavens Not Too Far, Sara, Confident, Kissin’ When We’re Mad

Fav Albums: Dear Paranoia Sincerely Me, Happy

7. Why Don’t We

Boybands were something I grew up on. They were everywhere and you couldn’t escape them even if you tried. Eventually, as much as I loved them growing up, I listened to them less and although I still loved them and listen to them, they aren’t as prevalent in my music rotation; but then Why Don’t We came along. Don’t get me wrong, I still have a soft spot for boybands and I do enjoy listening to them; after all Backstreet Boys, Nsync, One Direction, they are all on a Spotify playlist somewhere but Why Don’t We was special; they were unique compared to most boybands, and despite being on Hiatus, they’re still one of my favourite bands of all time. Why Don’t We had something other band boys rarely had, the ability to grow their music, the lyrical content, and musical themes as they grew. Most boy bands are focused on this cookie cutter image, that they’re expected to uphold. They are expected to be well liked, singing songs with catchy hooks, and of course be physically attractive. Why Don’t We didn’t care bout any of that. while a lot of their songs are poppy hits, a lot of them were deep and raw; Tracks like Grey and In Too Deep show that raw emotion, that pain, and their voices aren’t afraid to show it either as they sing. They bared their feelings, and wrote beautiful music that they were passionate about, and hoped that their fans would like it. Unlike most boy bands they also played their own instruments, and wrote/organized a lot of their tracks.

As their music grew so did their expansion, pretty soon it was a mix of pop/rock coming together to make some amazing hits like Fallin’ (Adrenaline) and How Do You Love Somebody. Their hiatus broke my heart when they announced it, the choice caused by a legal battle with a toxic record label and an abusive manager. Recently Why Don’t We won their suit; and I am hoping sooner rather than later we will be gifted with new music; for now though I will enjoy their solo careers; and the music Why Don’t We has already released.

Below I have listed my favourite songs from them (There are most likely more) and my favourite albums.

Fav Songs: Grey, In Too Deep, 8 Letters, Fallin (Adrenaline), How Do You Love Somebody, Hard, Love Back, What Am I?, Unbelievable, Trust Fund Baby, Cold In L.A., Big Plans, Hey Good Lookin’, Hooked, Don’t Change

Fav Albums: 8 Letters, The Good Times and The Bad Ones

8. Machine Gun Kelly

A controversial choice, but I never cared. With MGK, most people either love him or hate him, there’s no in between. I am a huge fan of Hailee Steinfeld; and although she is not on this list, I quite enjoy her music and because I listened to her, YouTube showed me a recommendation for her song with MGK and the rest was history. He is not the best rapper in the world; but I enjoy his music nonetheless. I grew even more fond of his music when he crossed into pop/punk, but no matter what genre he wants to create, I will always give it a fair chance. I also love that he is generous to his fans – treats them like family, seems like a nice guy, and does what he wants and doesn’t care what people think.

Below I have listed my favourite songs from him (There are most likely more) and my favourite albums.

Fav Songs: Maybe (Feat. Bring Me The Horizon), Emo Girl (Feat. Willow), Make Up Sex (Feat. blackbear), Bloody Valentine, My Ex’s Best Friend (Feat. blackbear), At My best (Feat. Hailee Steinfeld), Bad Things (Feat. Camilla Cabello), F*ck You, Goodbye (With The Kid Laroi), Home (With X Ambassadors & Bebe Rex), Bois Lie (With Avril Lavigne), No More Sad Songs (With Little Mix), End Of The Road (Feat. blackbear), Half Naked and Almost Famous

Fav Albums: Mainstream Sellout, Tickets To My Downfall

Song Of The Day – Feb 21 2024

Anything this woman touches is gold; at least in my opinion. Reputation wasn’t her strongest albums; at least in my opinion, however it does hold some of my favourite Taylor songs of all time on it; and this song is one of them. It’s not only a great song, but it’s one of my favourite Taylor songs.

Song: Delicate

Artist: Taylor Swift

Genre: Pop

Year: 2017

Song of the day – February 18 2024

Hello, for those that actually read this. I had taken a break from this series of blogs, not because I didn’t have songs to share; but because things had been really busy with work. In my line of work, winter is a rough time of the year; and we recently got some annoying snow.

Onto the topic at hand; Corbyn was a part of one of my favorite bands, Why Don’t We. He was one of the best performers in the group, and I knew a solo career would be a huge success for him. He’s a talented artist. I will definitely continue to follow his solo career, and hope he continues making hits like these.

Song: Love Me Better
